The Brazilian government is cracking down on illegal online betting. Recently, the Ministry of Finance asked the National Telecommunications Agency Anatel to block more than 1,800 illegal betting sites. This is part of a broader effort to regulate online gambling in the country.

  • On November 18, 2024, the MSecretaria de Prêmios e Apostas (SPA) do Ministério da Fazenda (MF) sent a list of 1,812 illegal betting sites to Anatel for blocking. This is the third list; previous ones were sent on October 11 and October 31. In total, over 5,200 sites have been blocked in less than 40 days.
  • Anatel has notified about 20,000 internet service providers in Brazil to block these sites. Each provider will take technical measures to ensure effective and swift blocking. Anatel will monitor compliance to make sure the blocks are properly implemented.
  • Blocking these sites is just one of the government’s actions against illegal betting. They’re also targeting illegal advertising, including by influencers, and the use of the national financial system by these companies. The goal is to curb illegal activities and protect consumers.
  • Only companies that applied for authorization by September 17, 2024, or were recommended by state or federal district regulators, can legally offer betting services until the end of the year. The Ministry of Finance plans to complete the analysis of these applications by December. Starting January 1, 2025, only companies authorized by the Prizes and Betting Department will be allowed to operate nationwide.
  • Companies operating during this transitional period are under probation. Their compliance with laws  is being monitored. Violations could result in denial of authorization to operate in the coming year.
