Big news from British horseracing today. Jim Mullen has been named the new Jockey Club CEO. The Jockey Club CEO role will officially pass to him on June 1st.
Mullen will join The Jockey Club from Reach plc, where he’s been CEO since 2019. Reach runs over 120 publishing brands, including the Mirror and Daily Express. He’ll replace interim chief Charlie Boss, who stepped in after Nevin Truesdale stepped down last year.
Aged 54, Mullen is no stranger to horseracing. He’s a fan, a racehorse owner, and a former CEO of Ladbrokes Coral. He also served as COO of William Hill Online and held senior digital roles at News International and Publicis Group.
Mullen currently sits on the board of Racecourse Media Group. This connects him with the media rights for 61 racecourses in the UK and Ireland. He brings a strong mix of publishing and gambling sector experience to the Jockey Club CEO role.
He’ll take over at an organisation that runs key events like the Cheltenham Festival and Grand National. It also operates major training centres and the National Stud, plus supports racing welfare initiatives.
Baroness Dido Harding, The Jockey Club’s Senior Steward, said Mullen has a “long and distinguished track record.” She praised his industry knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport.
Interim CEO Charlie Boss will stay on until July to help with the leadership handover. He led the club through its busy spring calendar, including Cheltenham and Aintree festivals.
