Denmark’s gambling landscape changed considerably between 2020 and 2025. While overall GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue) declined, the Danish gambling market continued to move towards online play. See more details according to data published by the Danish gambling regulator for this time period:

  • Total GGR fell from around DKK 12.74bn (ca. EUR 1.71bn) in 2020 to 11.52bn (ca. EUR 1.54bn) in 2025. Overall, GGR declined by around 9.7%, equal to a CAGR of about -2.0%. In 2025, online casino accounted for 38% (31% in 2020) of GGR, lotteries 30% (31%), betting 19% (25%), gaming machines 10% (11%) and land-based casinos 3% (3%).
  • Online casino overtook the lead in 2024.  GGR increased from DKK 3.911bn (ca. EUR 525m) in 2020 to DKK 4.309bn (ca. EUR 577m) in 2025.  Online casino remained Denmark’s largest gambling category in 2025 – after overtaking the lead from monopoly lotteries in 2024 –  accounting for around 38% of total GGR (see exhibit below).
  • Betting GGR fell by around 32% between 2020 and 2025. The segment, which includes both online and retail betting, dropped from DKK 3.147bn (ca. EUR 422m) to DKK 2.130bn (ca. EUR 285m). The mobile’s share of betting GGR rose from 54% to 71%. Over the same period, retail fell from 31% to 13%, while computer betting moved from 14% to 16%.
  • Monopoly lottery GGR also declined over the period. Total GGR fell from DKK 4.007bn (ca. EUR 538m) in 2020 to DKK 3.492bn (ca. EUR 468m) in 2025, a decrease of around 13%. The regulator does not provide an online versus retail breakdown for monopoly lottery GGR.  The 2025 GGR split was as follows: 79% were from Lotto games/number games; 12% from class lotteries and 9% from scratch games (online and land-based).
  • Online gambling took a growing share of Denmark’s total GGR between 2020 and 2025. The online share increased from 61% in 2020 to 67% in 2021, before slipping to 64% in 2022. It then climbed to 66% in 2023, 70% in 2024 and 73% in 2025.
  • Land-based gaming showed a different pattern, partly reflecting Covid restrictions during the earlier years. Gaming-machine GGR fell from DKK 1.352bn (ca. EUR 181m) in 2020 to DKK 1.181bn (ca. EUR 158m) in 2025, while land-based casino GGR rose from DKK 323m (ca. EUR 43m) to DKK 378m (ca. EUR 51m).
  • Note: DKK figures have been converted into EUR using the respective annual average DKK/EUR exchange rate. EUR figures are rounded and may therefore differ slightly from calculations based on unrounded values.
