According to the Portuguese regulator, the Gambling Inspection and Regulation Service (SRIJ) online gambling revenue in Portugal continued its upward trend in Q4 2024, reaching €323 million. This represents a 21.3% increase from the previous quarter and a 42.1% surge compared to Q4 2023. The sector’s growth was driven by both sports betting and fortune games.
The 17 licensed operators in Portugal held 30 active licenses, with 13 for sports betting and 17 for fortune games.
Fortune games (slots, table games, …) accounted for 57.2% of total revenue, while sports betting contributed 42.8%.
Revenue from sports betting hit €138.3 million, up 90% from Q4 2023 and 51.7% from the previous quarter.
Fortune games (slots, table games, …) generated €184.6 million, a 19.5% increase from Q4 2023 and 5.5% higher than Q3 2024.
Total sports betting volume reached €533.7 million, a slight 0.3% year-on-year increase but a 10.4% jump from Q3 2024.
Fortune games betting volume hit €5.15 billion, rising 21.1% year-on-year and 5.6% from the previous quarter.
Football dominated sports betting, representing 75% of total bets, followed by tennis (10.5%) and basketball (10.2%).
Online slot games led fortune gaming bets with 80.2% of total stakes, followed by French bank (5.4%), roulette (5.3%), and blackjack (4.8%).
Player registrations reached 4.72 million, growing 3% from Q3 and 15% from Q4 2023, with 78.4% of users under 45 years old.
Auto-exclusions rose to 292.4K, a 5.9% increase from Q3 and 36% higher than Q4 2023, representing 6.2% of all registered players.
Authorities shut down 41 illegal operators and blocked 112 illegal websites in Q4, bringing total shutdowns to 1,371 and blocked sites to 2,262 since 2015.
