The 151st Kentucky Derby wasn’t just about the horses—it was about the numbers, too. A new Kentucky Derby wagering record was set across all events, despite wet conditions on the track. More than 147,000 fans showed up to Churchill Downs to witness Sovereignty’s win.

  • A record-breaking $234.4 million was wagered on the Kentucky Derby race itself. This tops the previous record of $210.7 million set in 2024. Despite rain, fans and bettors turned out in record numbers.

  • The full Derby Day program generated $349.0 million in all-sources wagering. That’s an increase from last year’s $320.5 million. The event continues to grow year over year in betting interest.

  • Derby Week also hit a new all-time high in total handle with $473.9 million wagered. That’s up from 2024’s $446.6 million. This includes all races and related events at Churchill Downs.

  • TwinSpires, the official betting partner, recorded $108.0 million in wagering on Derby Day races. This beat the previous record of $92.1 million from last year. Their handle on the main Derby race alone hit $73.0 million, compared to $60.9 million in 2024.

  • CEO Bill Carstanjen called the results a success despite tough comparisons to last year’s 150th edition. “We are thrilled with our performance following the 150th milestone year,” he said. The company expects one of its best-ever Derby Week EBITDA results, although $2–$4 million lower than 2024.
