Sweden’s gambling regulator Spelinspektionen looked at gambling habits among people aged 18–29. The Sweden youth gambling survey was carried out in spring 2026.
- Lotteries and number games were the most common choice, played by 33% of all respondents. Online casino and slots came next at 20%, while 18% had bet on sports or horse racing. Among people who had gambled in the past year, 47% played lotteries or number games.
- Risky gambling was recorded among 47% of those who had gambled in the past year. It was more common among men and among those aged 18–24. Spelinspektionen said younger men are an important group for prevention efforts.
- Loot boxes and gambling with virtual game items (“skins”) were also linked to higher levels of risky gambling. Of those who first bought a loot box at age 12 or younger, 75% showed risky gambling behaviour. The rate was 69% among those who had both bought and used loot boxes (virtual boxes in video games that players buy or earn and open to receive random digital items, such as characters, weapons or cosmetic items).
- Watching gambling streams was also more common among risky gamblers. Some 18% watched casino, slots or betting streams monthly, while 7% did so weekly. Among those without risky gambling, 87% had not watched this type of content in the past year.
- Gambling advertising reached 91% of the young adults surveyed. Social media was the most common channel at 62%, followed by YouTube, TikTok and similar platforms at 57%. The survey did not determine whether the ads came from licensed or unlicensed operators.
