Super Group has stepped into the digital currency space with its new ZAR Supercoin launch. The company says the token is designed specifically for South Africa and wider African markets. It comes with a dedicated wallet and sits inside a new division called Super Money SA.

  • Super Money SA will run the ZAR Supercoin and its wallet as part of a push into blockchain services. The token is expected to support Betway payments over time to improve transactional efficiency. The ZAR Supercoin launch is framed as a move to meet demand for fast, cross-border digital payments.

  • African stablecoin activity – which is usually backed 1:1 by real money (fiat currency) –  is already estimated at around USD 100bn (ca. EUR 86bn) across major markets. Super Group believes a localised stablecoin can help reduce friction and expand accessibility for users. CFO Alinda van Wyk said, “The time is right for Super Group to move into the digital currency space, with our exciting new Supercoin.”

  • The coin will first be listed on Luno (a regulated cryptocurrency exchange operating in South Africa and some other countries). Users in South Africa will be able to buy, sell, and hold Supercoin on Luno, with international listings planned later. Super Group notes that the ZAR Supercoin launch aligns with growing interest in alternative payment methods in regulated gaming.

  • Supercoin’s fiat reserves will be held by ABSA Group, a tier 1 South African bank. The token will operate on the Solana blockchain, using Fireblocks technology for minting (creating new tokens) and lifecycle management. Fireblocks infrastructure will also provide secure custody for the stablecoin. Solana is known for very fast and low-cost transactions, which fits with the goal of making payments more efficient.

  • Chainalysis will provide compliance and transaction monitoring tools for Super Money SA. The system will help assess risk trends and track both primary and secondary market activity. The goal is to maintain a secure and compliant environment for all ZAR Supercoin users.
