Germany gambling tax (“Rennwett- und Lotteriesteuer) revenue reached a solid level in the first quarter of 2026. The figures – published by the German Federal Ministry of Finance – show how different verticals contributed across the country – see more details:
- Total tax revenue from gambling activities across all German states came in at EUR 632.3m for Q1 2026 with lottery tax remaining the main contributor with EUR 449.8m of the total. This confirms the central role lotteries play within Germany gambling tax revenue.
- Sports betting tax (“Sportwettensteuer”) generated EUR 117.8m during the quarter, making it the second-largest segment. North Rhine-Westphalia recorded the highest contribution among states in this category. Other large states such as Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg also posted notable figures.
- Online poker tax (“Online-Pokersteuer”) added €8.0m to the total, showing a smaller but measurable contribution. Revenues were spread across multiple states, with North Rhine-Westphalia again leading. The figures suggest steady but limited scale compared to other verticals.
- Lottery tax revenues were widely distributed, with North Rhine-Westphalia contributing EUR 102.6m alone. Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg followed with EUR 60.6m and EUR 50.6m respectively. This segment continues to anchor Germany gambling tax revenue overall.
- Among individual states, North Rhine-Westphalia led with EUR 154.1m in total gambling tax revenue. Bavaria (EUR 95.2m) and Baden-Württemberg (EUR 80.4m) followed behind (see exhibit below with Top Six states). Smaller states such as Bremen and Saarland contributed comparatively modest amounts.
- Horse betting and lottery-related taxes (excluding the main lottery tax) remained minimal at EUR 1.3m overall. These figures underline the limited role of niche segments in the broader tax structure. Most revenue continues to come from mainstream products.
- A breakdown of subcategories shows additional lottery-related taxes and totalisator taxes contributing only marginal amounts. “Totalisatorsteuer” reached EUR 1.35m, while other smaller taxes added just over EUR 0.1m. These segments have little impact on overall Germany gambling tax revenue.
