France’s gambling regulator ANJ has released a new guide on personal data protection in the gambling sector. The document was developed together with French data authority CNIL and targets licensed operators. The ANJ data protection guide focuses on how operators handle player information and digital compliance.

  • The guide outlines practical recommendations for collecting, storing and processing customer data. It covers topics such as account verification, marketing communications and fraud prevention. ANJ said operators should only collect data that is necessary for their services.
  • ANJ also addressed the growing use of automated monitoring and player tracking systems. The regulator said operators must remain transparent about how player information is used. The ANJ data protection guide includes reminders linked to GDPR obligations and responsible gambling controls.
  • One section focuses on cybersecurity and internal data management procedures. Operators are encouraged to strengthen access controls and regularly review retention periods for customer information. The regulator noted that online gambling platforms now process increasing volumes of sensitive data.
  • The guide was prepared in cooperation with CNIL to help operators apply privacy rules in daily operations. “The objective is to support operators in implementing practices that protect players’ personal data,” ANJ said.
