The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has welcomed the publication of a new European standard aimed at identifying risky gambling behaviour. The European gambling harm standard was officially published on 31 May 2026 through the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) – see more details:
- The European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) has published EN 18144, a voluntary standard designed to help gambling operators identify risky gambling behaviour.
- EN 18144 sets out nine behavioural markers linked to potential gambling harm. These include changes in betting activity, deposits, withdrawals, playing time and the use of responsible gambling tools. Operators can use these indicators to spot risk patterns earlier.
- EGBA proposed the initiative in 2022 and helped develop the standard alongside regulators, academics and harm prevention experts. The association said many of its members already monitor the indicators covered by the framework. Members have also committed to rolling it out across their European operations.
- EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer called the publication “an important milestone for player protection in Europe”. He said wider adoption could improve the early detection of risky play and strengthen safeguards for consumers. EGBA members hold 321 online gambling licences across 21 European countries.
