Portugal’s regulated online gambling market posted another quarter of year-on-year growth at the start of 2026, according to new figures from the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ) – see more details:

  • Gross gaming revenue (GGR) reached EUR 323.7 million in Q1 2026, up 13.7% from the same period last year. Online casino products generated 63.1% of total revenue, while sports betting contributed 36.9%. Compared with the previous quarter, total revenue declined by 4.1%.
  • Online casino revenue increased to EUR 204.2 million during the quarter. That represented year-on-year growth of 20.3%. Sports betting revenue reached €119.5 million, up 4.0% from Q1 2025.
  • Sports betting turnover totalled EUR 587.0 million. The figure was 17.0% higher than a year earlier and 2.8% above the previous quarter. Football remained the dominant sport, attracting 73.0% of all sports betting stakes.
  • The online casino segment recorded wagering volume of EUR 5.63 billion. This was 20.7% higher than in the first quarter of 2025. Slot-style machine games accounted for 80.4% of all online casino bets placed during the period.
  • Portugal online gambling operators reported 4.91 million player registrations at the end of March 2026. The market added 285,300 new registrations during the quarter. Overall registrations were 2.5% higher than a year earlier.
  • Younger adults continued to make up the largest share of the player base. People under the age of 45 represented 76.8% of all registered accounts. The 25-34 age group alone accounted for 32.5% of total registrations.
  • Around 1.27 million player accounts placed at least one wager during the quarter. This represented a 5.7% increase compared with Q1 2025. More than 41% of active accounts participated in both sports betting and online casino gaming.
  • Lisbon and Porto remained the largest markets for registered players, accounting for 21.9% and 20.9% of registrations respectively. Portuguese nationals represented 93.9% of all accounts. Among foreign players, Brazilian nationals made up the largest group.
  • Self-exclusion continued to increase across the regulated market. The number of self-excluded registrations reached 380,500, up 23.1% year-on-year. Self-excluded accounts represented 7.7% of all player registrations.
  • Portugal online gambling regulators also stepped up action against illegal operators. During the quarter, SRIJ issued 106 closure notices, ordered the blocking of 183 websites and referred 14 cases to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Since the market opened in 2015, authorities have issued 1,739 closure notices and blocked 2,930 illegal gambling websites.
