Betsson has backed out of its planned move into the Dutch market. The operator has officially pulled the plug on acquiring Holland Gaming Technology Ltd and Holland Power Gaming B.V. This Betsson Netherlands acquisition was first announced back in February 2024.

  • Betsson had lined up the deal to buy Holland Gaming Technology and Holland Power Gaming to strengthen its foothold in Europe. Both companies hold Dutch licences for online games of chance. The plan was to use them as a springboard into the Netherlands.

  • The agreement hinged on getting the green light from the Dutch Gambling Authority. But that approval never came through before the agreed deadline. With that window now closed, Betsson has decided to call the whole thing off.

  • As part of the unwinding, both Dutch companies go back to their original owners. Betsson will get its money back, minus a break fee. In total, €26.7m is being returned to the group.

  • The company said this outcome clears the way to “pursue other business opportunities.” It didn’t share details about what might come next. Importantly, Betsson said the cancellation won’t impact its earnings in any major way.

  • The Betsson Netherlands acquisition now joins a list of deals tripped up by regulatory hold-ups. Getting through licensing processes remains a key challenge in new markets. A spokesperson confirmed, “Since the decision wasn’t made by the long-stop date, the transaction had to be reversed.”
