Brazil has prohibited sports betting and online casino games under a provisional measure signed on 25 September (this is the orginal announcement). The Brazil gambling ban covers betting on sporting events as well as online games based on random outcomes. It applies to federal, state and Federal District operations.

• The measure prohibits the operation, offering, intermediation and advertising of the covered gambling products across Brazil. This includes bets on sporting events and online games where results are determined by random outcomes. Other lottery products authorised by law are excluded from the ban.
• Licensed operators must make their gambling websites and apps unavailable ten days after the measure’s publication. New player deposits are prohibited from the publication date, while unsettled bets remaining after the ten-day period must be refunded. Players remain entitled to winnings from bets settled before that deadline.
• Existing concessions, permissions and authorisations will expire 30 days after publication. Operators will not receive refunds for licence fees or compensation from the government. The Brazil gambling ban also prevents authorities from issuing new licences for the affected products.
• Advertising, marketing and sponsorship for the covered gambling products are also prohibited, with existing material to be removed within ten days. Financial institutions will generally be barred from processing related transactions, while authorities can order websites to be blocked. The Brazil gambling ban also applies to operators based abroad when they offer these products to people in Brazil.
