Brazil’s government has confirmed that 187 of 188 previously authorised betting websites have stopped operating. The Brazil gambling ban took effect on October 6, 2026 – see the most recent developments:
- 187 of 188 authorised betting websites had shut down by October 6, according to the Brazilian government. However, Stake Brazil secured a court order on October 8 allowing it to continue operating until October 25, 2026. The decision by São Paulo’s 9th Federal Civil Court temporarily protects Stake from the nationwide gambling shutdown. The ruling also prevents authorities from blocking or redirecting the operator’s website, stake.bet.br, solely because of the shutdown order. Stake’s request to continue operating until the end of 2029 was rejected, and the wider gambling ban remains in force.
- BRL 1.325 billion (ca. EUR 237 million) remains in player accounts. Around 26.5 million people still have funds on betting platforms. Banks must return the remaining balances between October 9 and 14.
- The Brazil gambling ban also targets illegal operators. Between September 25 and October 6, authorities submitted 13,241 illegal gambling websites for blocking. They also requested the removal of 3,552 social media pages, profiles and groups.
- Operators had until October 7 to submit outstanding player balances to banks. The government will also investigate accounts with unusually high balances for possible money laundering. From October 14, refunds that cannot be completed will be handled through Caixa, Brazil’s state-owned bank.
