The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has launched a framework for the use of artificial intelligence in gambling. Developed with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), the AI Gaming Charter gives gaming companies practical guidance on AI. It is voluntary and complements existing regulation.

• The AI Gaming Charter sets principles for responsible and transparent AI use. It follows discussions, surveys and consultation with MGA licensees. The framework also covers governance and human oversight.
• AI is already used across different areas of gambling. These include player protection, fraud detection and customer interaction. The Charter provides guidance for companies using these systems.
• The framework does not replace existing legal requirements. It sits alongside rules including the EU AI Act. The AI Gaming Charter adds guidance specifically for the gambling sector.
• MGA CEO Charles Mizzi said the regulator does not want to “stand in the way of innovation.” The MGA and MDIA combined gaming and AI expertise when developing the framework.
