A new face is stepping into Sweden’s finance leadership. The government has appointed Erik Eldhagen as state secretary, giving him a broad policy remit. This also includes work tied to Sweden gambling regulation, alongside other key financial areas.
Eldhagen will support finance market minister Niklas Wykman as state secretary, taking office on 1 December 2025. His portfolio covers financial markets, gambling oversight and state property management. The ministry also stated he will work on policies related to the financing of new nuclear power projects.
He joins the ministry after serving at the Riksbank, where he led the international secretariat. Before that, he worked in several leadership roles within the Ministry of Finance. His background also includes a period as an adviser at the World Bank, adding global experience to his new post.
The government said Eldhagen will help coordinate regulatory questions across the financial ecosystem. This includes matters touching on Sweden gambling regulation and the state’s broader financial framework. “His expertise will be valuable as we continue this work,” the ministry noted in its announcement.
His appointment comes at a time when regulatory discussions around gambling, financial stability and state assets remain active. Sweden gambling regulation has seen multiple policy debates in recent years. Eldhagen will support Wykman in managing these ongoing developments.
